Can you motivate kids by paying them for results?

It's an interesting question whether you're a parent or a child: does money work as a motivator, and if so, what's the best way to use it to get the desired results in older children and even college-age children? You might have a strong belief that motivation should be internal, not external, but then again, you might be a pragmatist and feel like if it works, it's a good thing.
